I’ve just got settled after spending the night in the comfortable hands of Lola and Nulty from Whilst Other Girls. Thanks a lot for the Peroni’s, much appreciated. Last night saw the return of one of Sheffield’s finest exports to the south, DJ Risco. If you’re not in the know about Big Dog Risco, you better ask someone. One third of Sheffield hip-hop collective Constant Creation, Heads from the Hills DJ and top notch turntablist Risco is one of the best producers in the UK today. Here’s one of his old summer jam mixes:

Friday night was great, in three words it was loud, messy and surreal. I’ve never had the pleasure to have people bum rush the stage, see a blind emcee move the crowd and watch Ms. Dynamite apply make up all in one night; like I said surreal. Renegade Brass Band tore the roof off, I was happy to shout over the top of them, the crowd was exceptionally positive through out the whole performance. One person was so into the rhythm he found himself on stage before being hauled off by Security. The Nextmen were great, unfortunately our set times kind of ran through both of our performances so we only caught the last fifteen minutes of their set. They did a real good remix of Major Lazer and Santigold with High Contrast that I managed to catch, dopeness. Brad and Dom thought Rory the drummer from Renegade Brass Band looked like a miniature DJ Yoda.

Cuba Libre and TTC Present:

The Tuesday Club and Cuba Libre are bringing Ms. Dynamite, The Nextmen, Trojan Sound System and The Renegade Brass Band together on Friday the 13th. I’m also going to be there, moonlighting with the Renegades for a couple of songs including War, Pastime Paradise and Let Me Clear My Throat. Here’s a quick rundown:

Ms. Dyamite is a two-time Brit award and three-time Mobo award winner. Which is nice… Her first album also received the Mercury Music Prize in 2002 and has since gone on to sell over a million units, going Platinum in the process.

The Nextmen released their debut album Amongst The Madness on the revered 75 Ark imprint. Originally intended to be a Mo’ Wax-style instrumentals album, their label began sending the beats out to rappers in the States and before they knew it, The Nextmen were hip hop producers, working with Public Enemy, Blackalicious, The Pharcyde and Morcheeba. – TheNextmen.com

Trojan Sound System formed in 2004. The Sound System has already had hugely successful shows as a single entity and with the greatest names in reggae and beyond including DJ Vadim, The Gentlemen’s Dub Club, DJ Yoda and the Scratch Perverts.

The Renegade Brass Band is a 10 piece funk collective from Sheffield. Citing Youngblood Brass Band, Rebirth Brass Band and the Hypnotic Brass Ensemble as influences. The Renegades play an all-brass mix of funk, hip-hop and soul including Stevie Wonder, Mark Ronson and Cannonball Adderley to name a few.

I’m also proud to say I was one of the people involved in puttin’ on the Renegade Brass Band’s first live performance alongside Baron and The Legend of the 7 Black Tentacles at our currently hiatal live-music improv night Consoul. Their drummer Rory has also guested with the Tentacles at live shows as a second drummer and is also one third of the much hyped Cobra Fist.

Doors open at 11.00 PM and we’re hitting the stage at 12.30 AM, there’s also the Tuesday Club Residents warming up the tables. First Word Records founder Andy H always knows how to rock a crowd so come down early. Adv. tickets are £6 (free drink) and can be purchased from The City Hall, Hallam Hubs, The Lyceum and online from the Sheffield Union.

New Live Events

Just got back from Leeds a few hours ago, thanks to all the people who came down and supported Oxjam and the promoters who worked on the individual nights around the city. It was great to get out and meet some people, play to a different crowd and start again outside our comfort zone.

The Tentacles and I, are also playing alongside From the Kites of San Quentin in Manchester on December 4th and then Bristol on the 5th (more details to follow) – We’re also supporting Johannesburg’s 4 piece BlkJks in Sheffield on November 4th, just two days after they share the stage with Warp Records artists Flying Lotus and Battles in Manchester.

On Friday the 13th of November I’m moonlighting with good friends The Renegade Brass Band to offer support to The Nextmen & Ms. Dynamite at The Tuesday Club in Sheffield. It’s been a while since I’ve played TTC.
